MACON — After the first day of the Class 4A Traditional wrestling tournament at the Macon Centreplex, Jefferson has a commanding lead over fellow Region 8-4A foes North Oconee and Flowery Branch.
Buford, the reigning Class 6A Duals champion, holds the slimmest of leads after the opening rounds, 138-137, over second place Lassiter in the 6A meet. Habersham Central is tied for 31st with 18 points.
The Dragons, who won the 4A Duals state title two weeks ago, put eight into Friday’s finals and piled up 231 points, nearly 100 points ahead of second place North Oconee (139). Branch, the Duals state runner-up, sits third with 128 points and had three advance to the finals.
The Dragons’ Chaz McDonald (106-pounds), Davis Dollar (113), Davis Dendy (132), Mason Mingus (138), Ayers Honiotes (145), Hoke Poe-Hogan (152), Creed Thomas (160), and Luke Cochran (170) all will wrestle for state titles.
For the Falcons, Aidan Fincher (113), Jarrett Greene (126), and Seth Larson (145) made the finals.
East Hall is in 20th with 43 points. Chestatee is tied for 40th with 6 points.
In the 6A meeet, Richmond Hill is third at 116.5 and South Paulding is fourth with 102.5 points.
It may go down to the final match in Class 6A as no one team has a dominant number of finalists. Lassiter managed the most of the top four with three while Buford, Richmond Hill, and South Paulding all sent just two into the finals.
Rylan Ibold (106) and Nick Cambria (132) will go for individual state titles for the Wolves.
Both the 6A and 4A finals will be held Friday night.
