MACON — Commerce could not overcome a slim deficit on Wednesday and finished third in the 2021 Georgia High School Association Class A Traditional wrestling championships at the Macon Centreplex.
The Tigers trailed by just 9 points heading into the finals but Day 1 leader Mt. Pisgah pulled away to capture the title with 256 points. Commerce finished with 202.5 points while defending champion Trion rallied to take second with 205.
Mt. Pisgah's title win snapped Commerce's seven-year run as Class A Traditional state champions, which had been the longest current streak by any team in any sport in the GHSA.
In the Class 2A meet, Banks County finished fourth with 148 points. Fannin County won its first-ever state title with 186 points, jumping over Day 1 leader Lovett late.
Commerce still had a strong showing with two wrestlers -- Eliah Burns (220-pounds) and Jakob Frates (285) -- both capturing individual titles in Class A. Daniel Nash (113), Bryson Flint (132), Grant Hamilton (152), and Sammy Brown (195) all finished as state runners-up. Dawson Legg took third at 120.
For Banks County in Class 2A, both Evan Clark (132) and Josh Stapleton (220) finished as state runners-up while Jacob Voyles (106), Angel Cruz (113), and Kellon Walley (145) all took third in their respective weight classes.
Rabun County's Miles Watts (152) captured the 152 title for the Wildcats.
Class 3A and the girls' divisions will conclude their tournaments on Thursday. North Hall leads after the first day and is looking for a titles sweep affter winning the 3A Duals two weeks ago.
The Class 4A tournament with Jefferson and Flowery Branch and the Class 6A tournament with Buford and Habersham Central will begin on Thursday as well.
