The Dawson County Board of Education did not have to look far to find the next superintendent for the school district. On Monday, board members announced Nicole LeCave is the sole finalist for the job.

LeCave, who has worked for the last 23 years for Dawson County Schools - 14 of those in administration, is currently serving as the deputy superintendent.

"I am confident that with our selection of Mrs. LeCave, we have identified the right person to lead our school district," said School Board Chairwoman Elaine Wilson in a media statement dated Dec. 20, 2021.

According to the statement, LeCave has worked at both the building and system levels, leading teams of teachers, administrators and support staff in high levels of academic success. She has also led key initiatives that have contributed to the school system’s growth. During her tenure, Dawson County Schools has been in the top 10% on the College and Career Performance index; district elementary and middle schools’ performance has remained in the top in a region which consists of 14 North Georgia counties; elementary schools have been aligned; standards-based grading has been initiated; grades 6-12 have been realigned ; graduation credits earned by eighth grade students and dual enrollment programs have substantially increased; data-driven professional learning, common assessments and formative assessment tools have been created.

In LeCave's bio, she said she has built her career on two principles: serving others and adding value.

Board of Education members were unanimous in selecting LeCave as the sole finalist for the job.

In compliance with Georgia law, the Board must wait a minimum of 14 days between announcing a finalist for the position of superintendent and making the appointment official. The Board is expected to vote on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022, at its regularly scheduled work session.

LeCave will take the reins from Dr. Damon Gibbs, who announced his retirement last month. Gibbs' final day with Dawson County Schools will be May 31, 2022.
