A man from Hiawassee has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for making threats against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi following the Jan. 6 demonstrations at the U.S. Capitol.
Grover Cleveland Meredith, Jr. was arrested on Jan. 7. Evidence presented in the case against Meredith showed he intended to be in Washington, D.C. for the Jan. 6 protest, but he was delayed by car trouble.
According to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Meredith told U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson he understood the charges against him and the conditions of his plea arrangement.
"I know what I did was wrong. I understand. I take full responsibility,” Meredith said in the sentencing hearing. “I was out of control that day. I apologize to Speaker Pelosi if it scared her or if she heard that at all.”
Meredith had texted a friend saying he was thinking about shooting Pelosi "in the noggin" on live television. When Meredith was arrested at a Washington, D.C. hotel, police said they found thousands of rounds of ammunition and several weapons in his vehicle.
Jackson denied a request from Meredith's attorney, who had asked that his client be sentenced to time served and allowed to return to his family in Georgia. The newspaper report said Meredith will be credited for the 11 months he has already been incarcerated.
Meredith is one of 16 Georgians who have been arrested for participating in the January incident.
