A residence for homeless families in the city of Cleveland can't moved forward just yet.
Cleveland City Council held a public hearing Monday night on a rezoning request by Family Promise of White and Habersham County for a property the agency purchased at 403 West Kytle Street. The origination, which assists homeless families, was requesting the property be rezoned from B-2 Commercial Business to R-2 Multi-Family Residential.
The request had been presented to the Cleveland Planning Commission, but the vote for the request was tied.
An estimated 40 supporters attended Monday's City Council meeting.
After hearing from several individuals who spoke in favor of the request, the council members made a couple of attempts to address the situation. Ward 2 Councilwoman Rebecca Yardley made a motion to allow the B-2 Commercial Business zoning to remain in place with a variance for R-2 Multi-Family Residential. Ward 1 Councilwoman Nan Bowen wanted the group to get a formal variance from the planning commission with certain conditions placed on that variance.
Finally, Ward 4 Councilman Bradley Greene made a motion that the request be tabled until their Jan. 10 meeting to give Family Promise time to go before the city planning commission and request a variance that would allow for multi-family residential use on a commercial business area.
Greene's motion was approved by a 3-1 vote with Yardley voting no, saying she wanted city council to take action rather than bouncing the request back to the planning board.
