A man from Sugar Hill was arrested in Hall County on Friday after he allegedly ran from deputies near I-985, then charged at them with a large tree branch.

According to a press release from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Roger Wayne Cranford, 50, of Sugar Hill, is charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer and tampering with evidence.

Deputies first witnessed Cranford smoking an unknown substance from a glass pipe under an overpass on I-985 at HF Reed Industrial Pkwy.

Cranford is accused of running on foot, then later charging toward deputies with a three-foot-long tree branch in hand. Deputies used a taser on Cranford and arrested him after. The release stated Cranford was not injured in the incident.

One deputy reported a minor injury, but medical attention was not sought by the deputy.

Cranford remained in the Hall County Jail as of 3 p.m. Monday, according to jail records.
