Gainesville Water Resources responded to a sewer overflow Wednesday afternoon at Flat Creek.
According to a press release from the city, staff responded to a report from Environmental Services about a wastewater discharge into Flat Creek near its crossing under Memorial Park Drive. They found a saturated section of ground in an easement and dammed it up to stop the flow into the creek within two hours.
The exact cause of the saturated ground is being investigated.
Water Resources officials estimate about 1,800 gallons may have entered Flat Creek, which enters into Lake Lanier. On site testing, both upstream and downstream, return normal.
The Georgia Environment Protection Division was notified Wednesday evening and signs were posted.
