Girls basketball: No. 1 Lumpkin, No. 3 Buford set up Monday showdown; GHS wins

JEFFERSON — The Buford girls opened their season with a dominating 72-40 win over Lithia Springs on Saturday in th Jackson-EMC Tipoff Classic at The Arena.

Kirby Wallis had 20 points to pace three Lady Wolves in double-figures. Ava Grace Watson had 17 points and Tamori Plantin 13 for Buford (1-0).

The Class 6A third-ranked Lady Wolves next will play Class 3A No. 1 Lumpkin County.

The Lady Indians routed Morgan County 65-22 on Saturday in another opening round game.

Mary Mullinax outscored the Lady Bulldogs pouring in 26 points to lead Lumpkin County (2-0). Averie Jones added 18 points and Lexi Pierce had 17 for the Lady Indians.

Tip-off for that anticipated clash will be at 3 p.m. on Monday at The Arena in Jefferson.


GAINESVILLE 65,
STONE MOUNTAIN 55

The Lady Red Elephants improved to 2-1 with a win on the road Saturday.

Gainesville used a huge 26-points second quarter to blow open a 9-9 tie for a 35-21 halftime lead. Stone Mountain trimmed the lead to 49-41 heading into the fourth quarter
but Gainesville pulled down the stretch.
 
KeKe Jones led nine Gainesville scorers with 23 points. Freshmen Julia Payne added 10 points for the Lady Red Elephants.
 
Gainesville next will play host to Chapel Hill on Monday at 7 p.m. and then take on Arabia Mountain on Tuesday at 7 p.m. as part of the Mickey Long Memorial Classic.

FIDELES ACADEMY 38,
LANIER CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 31

The Lady Lightning fell behind early, rallied late, but eventually fell short in the final game of the Southern States Christian Classic Tournament at Old Suwannee Christian School in Buford.

Lanier Christian (1-2) trailed by as many as 14 points and battled back to within one possession but could not complete the comeback.

Senior Ashley Avery led LCA with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 4 blocked shots. Ellie Roberts chipped in with 6 points and 4 rebounds and Camille Hoffman added 4 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, and had 2 steals as well for the Lady Lightning.
