Members of the Jackson County community have been showing their support for the Sheriff's Office following the death of Deputy Lena Marshall.
Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum has shared photos on social media this week of banners and blue lights on display around the county. Community members have also placed flowers and balloons on Marshall's patrol car outside of Sheriff's Office headquarters.
On Thursday, Mangum shared a photo that showed a tent set up over the display to protect it from rain.
"We sure hope the tent keeps the rain off of Deputy Marshall's patrol car," read Mangum's post. "So many people have stopped by. She touched many lives."
According to a separate post by Mangum, a prayer service is planned for today at 5 p.m. around Marshall's patrol car.
Marshall was shot on Nov. 5 while responding to a domestic disturbance at a residence on Highway 124 in Hoschton. She died as a result of her injuries three days later, according to a social media post by Mangum.
The suspect who shot and killed Marshall was identified by the GBI as Jessica Worsham. Worsham came to the door with a weapon when deputies responded to the scene. Deputies ordered Worsham to drop the weapon but she opened fire instead and struck Marshall. Worsham was shot and killed by another deputy who returned fire.
In a phone interview last week, Mangum described Marshall as a "very good deputy" who did her job well.
"She had over 10 years of law enforcement experience. A very good deputy, [she] knew what to do, did her job, and just was an asset to our office," Mangum said. "She was a good deputy, she was a hard-working deputy. She would get in there, just like the men, and she did her job. She did a good job serving Jackson County."
Mangum said Marshall's law enforcement career included two years with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, as well as time with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office and Winder Police Department.
Marshall's memorial service will take place Monday at 2 p.m. at Free Chapel Church in Braselton. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office will lead a processional starting from the Sheriff's Office at noon. The processional will make its way through Jefferson on the way to Free Chapel.
Marshall's body will be brought by horse-drawn carriage by the North Carolina State Troopers Caisson Unit from Memorial Park Funeral Home in Braselton to Free Chapel.
Memorial Park Funeral Home East Braselton Chapel has been placed in charge of arrangements.
A benefit fund for Marshall's three children has been set up through Northeast Georgia Bank. Donations can be made at any branch. Northeast Georgia Bank is located at 1775 Old Pendergrass Road in Jefferson.
