WDUN won top honors in the three categories in which it was nominated at Saturday's Georgia Association of Broadcasters’ 59th annual GABBY Awards.
The station was honored for best team news coverage, best reporter and best sports play-by-play during the ceremony Saturday night in Atlanta. The GABBYs are given each year to celebrate broadcasting excellence at radio and TV stations in Georgia.
"I'm especially proud of our awards this year because we have such a young news staff, and it's rewarding to see them doing so well against some really strong competition," Bill Maine, executive vice president and general manager, said.
AccessWDUN reporter Lauren Hunter won the GABBY for Best Reporter for the variety of stories she covered in 2020. Her work appears on the AccessWDUN website, WDUN's regular newscasts and during both "Mornings on Maine Street" and "Newsroom."
WDUN's Caleb Hutchins, analyst Gene Anderson and producer Avery Bryson for Best Play-By-Play for Buford's state championship game last December.
And the AccessWDUN news department won the GABBY for Best Pandemic Coverage for stories it produced about the coronavirus and its impact on Northeast Georgia.
WDUN competes in the association’s AA classification against stations in similar-sized markets. WDUN (AM550 and FM 102.9) and AccessWDUN.com are divisions of Jacobs Media, which also includes The Lake AM1240 and FM94.5. Jacobs Media will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2024.
The Georgia Association of Broadcasters, founded more than 80 years ago, represents the interests of Georgia’s over-the-air radio and television licensees who reach more than 95 percent of Georgia’s population every week. More than 500 entries were submitted to year’s GABBY Awards competition.
