244 days til Summer

Posted 9:48PM on Wednesday 20th October 2021 ( 3 years ago )

I have an 8-year-old, a 5-year-old, and a “watches-Frozen-every-day” year old.  I don’t get the obsession with Elsa. It’s Halloween and that’s all my littlest one wants to be – Elsa.

But why? Why Elsa? She’s mean and cold. Have you ever listened to the lyrics of her song? The whole song is demented… “No right, no wrong, no rules for me, I’m free!” Huh? That’s not exactly what I’m teaching my kids about the reality of life, but o.k.

“Conceal, Don’t feel, Don’t let them know… “ More words that are not healthy, at all.

“I don’t care what they are going to say, Let the storm rage on, the cold never bothered me anyway.” Let’s face it, Elsa seriously needs a good counselor.

I get it, Elsa had childhood issues. I still am not sure though why every little girl wants to dress up and be her, of all people. We all know Anna is the real hero of the story? SHE had childhood issues too, but SHE is the brave, fearless, kind, slightly naïve princess warrior that I want my daughters to be.

Maybe I’m mad at Elsa because I’m not a cold weather kind of girl. I hate the cold. I do not relate in any way to the words, “the cold never bothered me anyway.” The cold bothers me always. I like warm weather, warm hearts.

I’m more of a Moana kind of girl. Now THERE is a good movie. The warm sunshine, a daring princess, strong and determined. She deals with her issues head-on, instead of storming off (literally). She lives on an island, in the sun, travels by boat, and never wears shoes. THAT is a character I can get behind.

Everyone is so excited about this season… pumpkins, lattes and scented candles. Meanwhile, I may be the only person (or at least the only person in this building right now) that knows that there’s just 244 days until summer. I’m counting down.

Fall seems to be the theme of my social media page right now. I don’t really like fall. It blasts the trumpet that usher’s winter into the arena. And as much as I don’t like fall, I REALLY can’t stand winter.

There are some good things about winter, don’t get me wrong. I LOVE a cozy fire, a … a ... well, I can’t think of much else. I was going to make a list, but it escaped me. What do I add? A cozy fire, a warm sweater? Wrong. Why would I want to add bulkiness to my already growing, wintertime frame? Or to be more blunt (blunter?), why would I want to look fatter than I already do? No, thank you. I can’t stand wintertime clothes.

So, let’s try again. A cozy fire, winter boots? Nope. Wrong again. I feel so suffocated having to wear socks and shoes all the time. Moana and her bare feet touching the soft sand is definitely more my style.

A cozy fire, a spiced latte… What IS that even? A latte? I confess, I googled it. Milk coffee. I’m not a coffee drinker. So, nix that. Pumpkin spice? Another thing that is not for me. The only pumpkin I like is the one that carries me to the ball to meet my prince.

I’m not all Negative Nelly. I can think of a thousand things I love about spring and summer. But, since we aren’t there yet, I will determine to focus on the things I enjoy about the here and now.

I do love Christmas. It’s become increasingly more stressful as a mom of three (and with a birthday kid at the same time). But I love the excitement. I love baking. (Wait, I lie. I don’t love baking, I love when other people bake. I love the smell of baking.) I love the Rose Bowl Parade, the Winter Olympics and New Year’s Eve. I love watching all of these things through my kids' eyes now.

I even love Halloween. I don’t care for spooky stuff, but I enjoy the magical moments of childhood. We gather together with cousins and everyone is excited. We come back to a family member’s house for chili and cake (no pumpkin stuff, please!). I sneak candy from my kids for days.

So, these are the moments I’ll cherish. I’ll give Elsa what she wants and shut her out, along with the cold weather and the need for heated seats in my car, and I’ll be grateful for this season. Because of this season, I appreciate spring. I appreciate change. It was warm yesterday and now it’s cold. While that sometimes makes me annoyed, I also remember that the seasons change just as quickly back again. Time doesn’t stop. Seasons don’t stop.

There’s beauty in the changing seasons, even if it did give me a sneaky sinus infection.

And I don’t TOTALLY mind Elsa. Especially when she’s a cute, three-year-old holding my hand and saying “Trick or Treat!” Now, that Elsa I adore.
