TIGER — Gunner Stockton is the new state touchdown record holder.
The senior Rabun County quarterback broke former Gainesville standout Deshaun Watson's record for total touchdowns in the Class 2A No. 1-ranked Wildcats’ 45-14 win over Grovetown on Friday at home.
Stockton came into the game just two touchdowns behind Watson’s Georgia High School Association record of 217. He tossed five TD passes and ran for another to break the record and now sits at 221 for his career.
The Wildcats (6-1) wasted little time as Stockton capped their opening drive with a 7-yard touchdown run. After a 27-yard Gus Hood field goal, Stockton tied the record with an 8-yard TD pass to Baxley O’Brien early in the second quarter.
Stockton broke the record with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Jaden Gibson midway through the second quarter for a 24-0 lead. Stockton and Gibson connected on a 28-yard touchdown strike in the final minute of the first half for a 31-0 halftime lead.
Stockton finished with 327 yards passing. Gibson, who came into the game leading the state in receiving, had 10 catches for 137 yards.
