Hall Commissioners' pay increase will be debated and decided on Thursday

Posted 6:30PM on Monday 11th October 2021 ( 2 years ago )

GAINESVILLE – The agenda item concerning a pay increase for members of the Hall County Commission was officially read during the Commission work session Monday afternoon and now moves to a final vote on Thursday.

Basically, the pay increases would go into effect fourteen months from now, on January 1, 2023, and raise the chairman’s base salary to $50,000 per year and the salary of each district commissioner to $45,000.  The last time a pay increase was approved was in 2007.

Murrayville resident Doug Aiken spoke during public comment at Monday’s work session in opposition to the move.

Aikens said, “There’s a little thing, I always thought, that’s called ‘public service’.  But y’all are starting to remind me of a group of folks that’s up in Washington.”

“If you’re going to do this drop all your benefits,” Aiken insisted.  “It seems like after two years…it becomes dollars and cents and prestige and power.”

After the meeting commissioners were asked if they wanted to comment on what Aiken said; none did, preferring, rather, to save their comments for Thursday evening’s voting session.

That voting session begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Gainesville Civic Center on Green Street.  The public is welcome to attend.

LAW DEPARTMENT GROWS

Hall County Commissioners are expected to approve Thursday evening an employment agreement with William J. Linkous III, adding him to the county’s Law Department.

Linkous will serve as Deputy County Attorney and work with County Attorney Van Stephens to handle legal issues for the county.

According to county documents Linkous’ salary will be $160,000 annually.  With benefits and other related expenses the employment package totals $226.254.10.
