ATHENS — Quarterback JT Daniels' status is uncertain for No. 2 Georgia again this week. Daniels was held out of throwing drills in the week's first practice for this week's Southeastern Conference game at No. 18 Auburn. The Bulldogs leaned on their running game and defense to overwhelm No. 8 Arkansas 37-0 last week. Daniels was in uniform but did not play after testing his right lat injury in pregame warmups. Stetson Bennett filled in for Daniels and passed for only 72 yards in his second start of the season. Georgia coach Kirby Smart says he remains hopeful Daniels can play against the Tigers.
TUSCALOOSA — Alabama coach Nick Saban says tailback Jase McClellan is out for the year with a knee injury. The top-ranked Crimson Tide’s top backup runner is set for surgery on Tuesday, Saban said. McClellan was injured in a win over No. 17 Mississippi, when Brian Robinson Jr. ran 36 times for 171 yards and four touchdowns. McClellan is second on the team in rushing with 40 carries for 191 yards and a touchdown. He also has 10 catches for 97 yards with another three scores.
OXFORD, Miss. — Mississippi coach Lane Kiffin has apologized for his abbreviated live pre-game interview with CBS. Before the Alabama game, Kiffin responded to a question from CBS reporter Jamie Erdahl by saying: “Here we go. Get the popcorn ready.” Then he flipped away the headset and trotted off without letting her ask another question. On Monday, Kiffin said the move was not premeditated and he got “caught up in emotions.” He says that he reached out to Erdahl to apologize.
BIRMINGHAM — The Southeastern Conference has fined Kentucky $250,000 for violating its access to competition area policy after fans rushed the field at the end of the Wildcats’ 20-13 victory over then-No. 10 Florida. The school was fined for a third policy offense. Its previous violation and fine occurred following a game against Mississippi State in 2018. A crowd of 61,632 watched unbeaten Kentucky earn its first home victory over Florida since 1986 and first over a Top-10 opponent since 2010.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Hendon Hooker has played well enough to finally earn the starting quarterback job at Tennessee. Volunteers coach Josh Heupel had left open the issue of who his starter is the past five weeks after initially naming Joe Milton to the job. But an injury to Milton opened the job up to Hooker. His performance in a rout of Missouri last weekend was enough for Heupel to finally be named the starter Monday. The Vols host South Carolina on Saturday. Hooker’s ball security helped sway his head coach. Hooker has eight TD passes and no interceptions as a starter.
