A Young Harris man remains jailed in North Carolina after allegedly shooting his estranged wife in Hiawassee on Tuesday.

The shooting took place at Chatuge Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinic in Hiawassee, where the victim worked.

“The victim, an employee of the clinic, was shot multiple times by Charles Jason Matheson, 41, of Young Harris, the victim’s estranged husband,” said GBI Special Agent in Charge Kim Williams. “The victim was transported to a north Georgia area hospital for treatment.”

Williams said Matheson left the scene and traveled to a family home in Clay County, N.C., where the GBI and Hiawassee police officials coordinated with Clay County Sheriff’s Office to locate and apprehend Matheson.

Clay County officials arrested Matheson without incident on Georgia aggravated assault charges. He remains jailed in Clay County, N.C., pending extradition to Georgia.

When the ongoing investigation is concluded, it will be provided to the Enotah Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
