A Gwinnett County teen is behind bars after he allegedly scammed a Kroger store of $980,000.

A press release from the Gwinnett County Police Department states that 19-year-old Tre Brown of Duluth created false returns for the Kroger store on Steve Reynold Boulevard between December and January of last year. Brown was an employee of the store at the same time he was creating the false returns.

Detectives with Gwinnett County Police believe that Brown created more than 40 false returns for non-existent items and put the money on several credit cards. The returns ranged in price from $75 to $87,000. Brown was able to steal more than $980,000 within a two-week time span, at which point Kroger corporate employees noticed the fradulent transactions and contacted police.

Investigators discovered that Brown used the stolen money to purchase clothes, guns, shoes and two vehicles. Prior to his arrest, Brown totaled one of the vehicles. A large portion of the money was returned following Brown's arrest.

Brown is charged with theft by taking.
