Remote instruction will come to an end for some students in the Gainesville City School System next week.
System Superintendent Jeremy Williams said employees learned of the update Thursday morning and parents and students are being notified throughout the day.
"While the local Covid-19 data is not ideal, we will be phasing our students back to school," Williams said in a prepared statement. "Beginning Tuesday, January 19, all self-contained Special Education students and Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade students will return to Face-to-Face Instruction."
Williams said students in 3rd through 12th grades will continue with remote instruction for the time being. Additionally, meals will be provided on bus routes for all students participating in the remote learning model.
"As we monitor the return, we hope to increase the number of students back in school the following week," Williams said.
Gainesville schools, along with many in the North Georgia region, made a decision to forego face-to-face learning at the start of the semester because of high numbers of confirmed coronavirus cases, including many among teachers and school staff.
