The temperature may be in the 30s right now, and the coronavirus is still with us. But that is not stopping state and area high schools from opening up springs sports as scheduled.

Tennis programs began practicing last week. Monday marked the official start date for soccer and track programs. Most of the northeast Georgia area school systems are employing some variation of blended learning due to the coronavirus but are moving ahead with planned seasons.

"We are starting today and I figure probably everyone else around the area and state are as well," Chestatee boys soccer coach Mike Herrin said. "There may be a few schools that can't start but as far as I know there have been no plans or talk (from the Georgia High School Association) about not having a season. We're ready to get going. The biggest issue will just be how many kids will show up each day to practice. That will create some challenges but nothing we can't deal with."

Soccer programs can schedule their first match beginning on Feb. 1.

Baseball and lacrosse practices are scheduled to begin on Jan. 18. Golf will begin practice on Feb. 8.

Track teams can hold their first meets beginning on Feb. 8 and lacrosse also can play its first match on Feb. 8. Golf teams can tee up the season beginning on Feb. 13 and first pitch for the baseball season is set to begin on Feb. 15.

Tennis is the first spring sport set to open its regular season, beginning on Jan. 25.
