JOHNS CREEK – Offense hasn’t been an issue for Dawson County this season. It’s been the defense.
On Friday, both were playing on point as the Tigers (1-3) rolled to a 42-20 victory over Northview. It was the Tigers’ first win of the season.
Dawson County entered Friday night giving up 43.6 points per game, second-worst in Class 3A while scoring 32 points per game on offense, and the last two games found themselves in a shootout with Flowery Branch and South Forsyth.
It was a bit different against Northview.
After a back-and-forth start, the Tigers found their groove, thanks to a few big-play touchdowns.
Isaiah Grindle started the scoring with a 72-yard run with 7:11 to go in the second quarter, then Zach Holtzclaw connected with Dakohta Sonnichsen on a 60-yards strike with 4:23 to go.
Holtzclaw scored again on a 2-yard run, giving the Tigers a 21-20 lead with 5:10 remaining in the first half.
In the second half, Sonnichsen go loose on a 55-yard punt return, Grindle scored on a 5-yard run, and Trip Caine returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown.
