COMMERCE — Class A Public seventh-ranked Commerce built an early big lead and then pulled away in the second half to beat Class 2A Elbert County 55-28 on Friday at Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers (3-1) jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter but then the Blue Devils stormed back. They picked off a Trey Huff pass and returned it 20 yards for a score to get within 21-14 early in the second quarter.
Huff, however, made up for that mistake on the next possession rumbling 51-yards for a score to push the lead back to 28-14. The Tigers went to the half with a 28-21 lead and struck quickly again to open the second half.
Dreylan Martin romped 30-yards on the second play of the third quarter to make it a 35-21 lead and Elbert trimmed it back to a 7-point lead on a 16-yard touchdown pass.
But it was all Commerce the rest of the way as the Tigers scored the final 20 points.
Sammy Brown scored on a 45-yard run, Huff added a 1-yard keeper, and Tyelon Brock rambled 66-yards for the final score.
