HIAWASSEE — Towns County’s bid for its best start since 2008 was dealt a crushing blow when Mt. Zion-Carroll scored and then converted a 2-point conversion in overtime to steal a 21-20 victory Friday night.

The Indians (2-2) rallied twice to tie the game, once in each half. They then took a 20-13 lead in overtime on a 4-yard run. But they couldn’t hold it.

Mt Zion’s Antron Thompson got the first score on a 33-yard run with 4:20 left in the first half. The Indians would tie the game just before the break, converting a 4th-and-3 with a 27-yard TD pass from Mason Thomas with just 37.5 seconds left.

It stayed that way until late in the third quarter when Jayden Perkins scored from 26 yards to give the Eagles a 13-7 lead. Towns again would rally, tying the game at 13-13 with just 1:53 left in the game. The Indians missed the extra point, however, which would have given them the win.

In overtime, Towns County went first and scored to go up 20-13. But Perkins scored again for the Eagles, who then ran in a 2-point conversion for the win.

Towns County finished with 330 yards of total offense. Mason Thomas was 21-of-32 for 166 yards passing. Collin Crowder was his favorite target grabbing 9 receptions for 80 yards. Meanwhile, Class A Public rushing leader Kyle Oakes pounded out 140 yards on 27 attempts and scored twice.

However, the Indians were their own worst enemy on Friday. They missed a pair of fied goals and an extra points to go with 70 yards of offensive penalties.
