Habersham County Commissioners set meeting to again consider a proposed annexation agreement

The Habersham County Commission has called a meeting for 6 p.m. today to again consider a proposed agreement for annexation on Thompson Road near Baldwin.

After hearing from residents of the Thompson Road area near Baldwin Monday night, the commission failed to take action to approve a proposed intergovernmental agreement with the City of Baldwin and developers. That proposed agreement came as the result of arbitration between the parties.

Prior to arbitration, the 145-acre annexation would have allowed the city to permit construction of more than 700 housing units on land where county zoning currently would allow less than 50 (or 145 if rezoned).

Under the terms of the proposed agreement, residential units would be limited to 580 and construction on any apartment units on the property cannot begin until after Sept. 11, 2024.

Earlier Monday night, the Baldwin City Council voted unanimously to enter the proposed agreement with Habersham County and the developers, Lula Capital LLC and Rochelles 2010 LLC.

Today’s county commission meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the Jury Assembly Room of the Habersham County Courthouse, 295 Llewellyn Street, Clarkesville.

The meeting will be streamed on the county’s website, www.habershamga.com.
