GAINESVILLE – When the Hall County Commission convenes its voting session on Thursday, among the agenda items to be decided that night will be approving a waiver of the tipping fees for the annual Lake Lanier Shore Sweep.
Now in its 32nd year the intercounty shoreline clean-up organized by the Lake Lanier Association is anticipating 35-tons of trash to be collected by over a thousand volunteers on Saturday, September 26th.
The cost for that much inorganic debris and other flotsam and jetsam going to the Hall County Landfill would normally be around $1600. Waiving that charge will likely be approved by commissioners as that has become the tradition for the past several decades.
According to the Lake Lanier Association website page for the event, social distancing and mask wearing will be practiced during the clean-up.
There will be designated locations around Lake Lanier’s 692-miles of shoreline for volunteers to use as collection sites for the rubbish they gather, both on the day of the Shore Sweep and during the weeks leading up to the event.
Advance sites have been open for trash collection since September 12th and include: Shady Grove Park, where Beaver Ruin Road (old roadway) enters the lake in Young Deer Creek, Gwinnett Park, Gaines Ferry Island, the island across from Keith Bridge Park that separates the Chestatee River from the Chattahoochee River, the unnamed island where Wahoo Creek and Little River meet by marker “2WC, and the island across from Nix Bridge Park.
These advance sites will close on September 25th, the evening before the Shore Sweep event.
Locations that will be used on the day of the Shore Sweep only include: Aqualand Marina, Bald Ridge Marina, Balus Creek Access, Lake Lanier Olympic Park, Don Carter State Park, Gainesville Marina, Gwinnett Park, Lake Lanier Islands, Longwood Park, Port Royale Marina, University Yacht Club and War Hill Park boat ramp.

Volunteers will receive a souvenir T-shirt and supplies for collecting the trash they encounter.
With the lake being over full summer pool much of the collection will need to be done by boat since exposed lake-bottom access on which to walk is a non sequitur.
