An Acworth man died in the hospital following his involvement in a Pickens County officer-involved shooting Saturday morning.

According to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Pickens County 911 center received a trespass call about 52-year-old Derek Cooper at a home in Talking Rock around 11 a.m.

The caller indicated there was a restraining order against cooper, and that Cooper had attempted to kill his wife during a domestic incident this week, according to the press release. The wife, children and another family member were hiding in the home. The GBI confirmed that Cooper was in fact out on bond for the domestic violence incident on conditions of no contact with his wife and children.

When a Pickens County Sheriff's Deputy arrived at the home, they found Cooper in the back yard and gave him verbal commands. Cooper then brandished a firearm and fired at the deputy. Cooper tried to force his way into the home with the gun, at which time the deputy fired at Cooper, striking him.

Lifesaving measures were performed on Cooper at the scene until he was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

The press release states the deputy was uninjured.
