BLAIRSVILLE — Eli Peugh set the tone for Union County picking off a Chestatee pass on the opening play of the game for a pick-6 and helping the Panthers knock off the War Eagles 39-19 on Friday night at Mike Colwell Memorial Stadium.
It was the first win of the season for Union County (1-2) which had struggled to find some consistency while rebuilding off last year's historic season. Chestatee fell to 0-2 on the season with the loss.
After being stopped again, the War Eagles blocked a Union County punt inside the Panthers’ 5 and scored moments later to tie the game. Union County answered back to take a 14-7 lead when Carson Walker scored on a 3-yard run. The Panthers eventually went to the half with a 24-13 lead after Mason McCombs booted a 27-yd FG in the waning seconds.
The Panthers exploded out of the half as Walker, who had 125 yards and 2 TDs on 14 carries in the first half alone, took the second-half kickoff of 90 yards for a 32-13 lead after a 2-point conversion.
The two teams' traded touchdowns in the second half but the War Eagles could never get untracked.
