A man known as a transient to local law enforcement remained in the Hall County Jail Monday, charged with an assault on a 54-year-old woman.

Michael Wayne Burgess,35, was arrested Friday afternoon, less than 24 hours after the Gainesville Police Department released a photo on social media.

Gainesville Police Department Cpl. Jessica Van said the victim reported the alleged assault on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

"The victim met the suspect at a business on Sunday evening Aug. 23 and the assault took place over a span of a couple of days at a residence in the city of Gainesville," Van said.

Investigators issued warrants for aggravated battery, aggravated sodomy, kidnapping and robbery by intimidation on Thursday; Burgess was arrested at a location on Sardis Road in northwest Hall County Friday afternoon.

Van declined to issue specific details on how Burgess and the victim might have known each other. She said it is possible Burgess could face additional charges in the incident.

Van said Burgess has had prior arrests in the city.
