THOMASTON — So far so good for prep football kicking off in Georgia.
Things are still on track to begin the 2020 football season on Sept. 4 after Wednesday’s meeting between the Georgia High School Association and its sports medicine advisory committee.
It was the latest of a series of weekly meetings the SMAC and the GHSA has held to monitor the COVID-19 situation. GHSA executive director Robin Hines issued the statement on the organization's website late Wednesday after the meeting to say everything is still a go to open the season on Sept. 4 around the state.
Several of the state's largest systems, like DeKalb, Fulton, Bibb, and Chatham counties, have opted to delay their starts into October or play intra-system schedules (Savannah) but more than 400 of the state's 469 GHSA schools are still set to open Sept. 4.
Only Riverside Military Academy, which plays in Region 8-2A, has opted not to play fall sports, so far, in our northeast Georgia coverage area.
