Gainesville man murdered in Athens, suspect at large

A Gainesville man was shot and killed Monday, July 27 in Athens, and the suspect in the case remains at large.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department issued a press statement identifying the victim as Jarred Lamar Sanders, 34. 

Investigators identified the suspect as Joseph Baughans, 35, of Athens. Baughans was described only as a Black male. He was last seen wearing a white shirt and blue pants. Baughans is wanted on a malice murder warrant.

Sanders was shot just before 2 p.m. Monday at 160 Hickman Drive near the downtown Athens area. 

Police did not say what motivated the deadly shooting. 

Anyone who has information on the whereabouts of Baughns is asked to call 9-1-1. Baughns should be considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.
