Georgia has locally-controlled school districts, but it appears the state Board of Education may push public schools to hold off on the start of the new year until the day after Labor Day.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the state Board of Education will meet today at 9 a.m., according to the published calendar on the Georgia Department of Education website. They will consider a resolution calling for Sept. 8 to be the statewide start date for public schools.
Valarie Wilson, the Executive Director of the Georgia School Boards Association, said the group was not consulted about the possible resolution.
"We started hearing rumors earlier today, and the rumors started to take more leg this afternoon. Later, we received confirmation the state board would be discussing it tomorrow," Wilson told the newspaper in a Wednesday night interview. Wilson said she did not think a statewide push to delay school start dates would benefit local school districts.
Board members meet at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 23.
