THOMASTON — Starting next week, helmets will be allowed by football teams as summer workouts continue for Georgia High School Association member schools.
The GHSA and the Sports Medicine Advisory Council conducted its weekly meeting Wednesday and they elected to implement the use of football helmets only with the following stipulations:
- 1) football players may be issued a football helmet to begin using on July 20th, and
- 2) schools must sanitize the helmet before and after each workout. All previously distributed correspondence is still in place until further notice, especially no use of locker rooms.
Also, the GHSA and the SMAC began discussions about the start of the acclimatization period (beginning July 27), first date for practice (August 1) and the first contest dates for each fall sport and activity, wich are typicaly different dates.
Gainesville Athletic Director Adam Lindsey said they would follow the GHSA guidelines and add helmets to their workouts beginning Monday.
According to East Hall Athletic Director Adam Rich, Hall County schools also will be adding helmets to their workouts.
White County coach Tim Cokely confirmed the Warriors will be adding helmets as well.
(AccessWDUN Sports reached out to other ADs around the northeast Georgia area on Wednesday but could not reach anyone to confirm that other area schools would or would not be implementing adding helmets to their workouts.)
