A male who jumped into Lake Burton Sunday morning went under and didn’t resurface.
“Game Wardens Joe Hill, Jared Wood, Jonathan Segars and Ethan Franklin just finished working a drowning on Lake Burton that was called in at approximately 10:25,” said Maj. Mike England of Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division.
“The Game Wardens responded to 2812 Meeting House Mountain Road in reference to a male subject jumping into the lake and not surfacing,” England said. “A witness on scene stated the male subject began to immediately struggle after jumping into the water.
The witness observed the male go under and begin to sink. The Game Wardens operated the side scan sonar on their patrol vessel and marked a target in the area the male subject was last seen. Towns County and Oconee County, S.C., dive teams arrived and recovered the victim from the marked target.”
The incident was north of Governor’s Cove toward the bridge.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of the family.
