Government officials in Forsyth County made it official Thursday, June 25, breaking ground on a new dog park for the northern end of the county.

The four-acre park is being built across from the Forsyth County Animal Shelter on County Way just off Georgia 400. Once complete, the park will feature synthetic dog turf, dog water fountains, climbing boulder, wooded areas, dog walk ramp, tunnel, sunshades, shaded benches and two family-style restrooms. The funding for the park comes from private donations, Parks & Recreation Capital Funds and SPLOST VIII proceeds.

"The park is a continuation of Forsyth County’s dedication to provide our residents, and in this case, their four-legged friends, with quality amenities for everyone to enjoy," said  District 4 Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills during the ceremony.

If all goes as planned, the park will be finished in fall 2020.

In conjunction with the groundbreaking event, officials with the Forsyth County Animal Shelter announced details of the Summer of Love adoption promotion. From Friday, June 26 through Sept. 8, the standard $85 adoption fee for animals will be waived.

"We are very excited to give residents a chance to bring home a pet at no cost,” said Animal Shelter Manager Cindy Iacopella. “All of the pets in the shelter deserve a good home and we are hopeful that this promotion will help families bring a new companion home this summer.”

All shelter pet adoptions include microchipping, spaying/neutering and age appropriate vaccinations. All animal adoptions are currently being conducted via appointment only. Adoptable animals can be viewed online on the Shelter’s webpage at Forsythco.com under the “Adoptable Animals” tab. An adoption appointment can be made by submitting an adoption application which can be found on the Shelter’s webpage. For more information, call (678) 965-7185 or visit forsythco.com/animalshelter.
