A man who robbed two people at gunpoint at a house in Gainesville on Monday and then fled from police was involved in a traffic accident and later died, the Hall County Sheriff's Office said.

The 44-year-old suspect, who has not yet been named, brandished a handgun and robbed a man and a woman at a house in the 1300 block of Marlow Drive. He took an undisclosed amount of cash and left the scene in a back Nissan car.

As deputies were responding, they encountered a car matching the description at the intersection of Marlow Drive and West Ridge Road. The deputies, assisted by Gainesville police, attempted a traffic stop, but the man fled. Officers pursued the car for short distance before the man circled back and was involved in a traffic accident at Marlow and West Ridge.

The man fled on foot but was located by deputies and short time later. He had visible injuries to his face and head. Hall County Fire Services was dispatched to the scene and transported him to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he later died.

When law enforcement located the driver, he had a bag containing the firearm used in the robbery as well as cash. In addition to the local incident, the driver had two outstanding warrants, one for felony probation in Harris County and another for possession of dangerous drugs in San Francisco.

The robbery remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division. The man’s body had been sent to the medical examiner for an autopsy. The Sheriff’s Office is attempting to notify the man’s family before releasing his name.
