GAINESVILLE — Georgia Golf Hall of Fame member James Mason, the PGA teaching professional from The Orchard Club in Clarksville, captured the third annual Milton Martin Honda Classic supported by Srixon/Cleveland Golf/XXIO at Chattahoochee Golf Course on Tuesday.
The 69-year-old Mason fired a second-round 7-under par 65, which paired with his first-round score of 69 for a two-day total of 10-under par 134 to defeat J.P. Griffin of the Capital City Club and amateur Ruan Pretorius from Point University by a single stroke. Mason’s second-round score matched the low round of the tournament that was posted by first-round leader Sonny Skinner of Sylvester.
Mason took home the $2,000 purse. Pretorius won low amateur honors. He is a native of South Africa, playing collegiately in the United States. Defending champion, Matt Elliott of Dahlonega fired rounds of 74 and 67 to finish in a tie for 10th place.
