The Georgia Army National Guard has announced plans for statewide flyover events on Memorial Day, with several Northeast Georgia locations included in their plan.
Two flights are planned, with one leaving the Clay National Guard Center in Marietta, and the other taking off from the Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah.
"This year, our nation will observe Memorial Day under completely unprecedented circumstances," said Georgia Department of Defense spokeswoman Desiree Bamba. "Social distancing and travel restrictions imposed by COVID-19 preclude many of us from gathering, but they do not prevent us joining together in spirit for the common purpose of honoring our fallen."
Maj. Gen. Tom Carden, Adjutant General of the Georgia Department of Defense, said the flyovers provided a few moments for Georgians to pause and recognize the sacrifices made by service members and their families, adding that, "it is part of our culture to remember and to honor, and it is going to take more than a global pandemic to change that part of us."
