Staff at Northeast Georgia Health System are "cautiously optimistic" about the recent downward trend in positive COVID-19 cases among their patients. But until the pandemic passes, staff at NGHS are committed to providing excellent care to each of their patients while continuing precautionary measures that are in place.

Some of the measures include screening patients for symptoms of COVID-19 before they enter the hospital, placing them in appropriate areas of the hospital based on their symptoms and requiring all staff to wear masks while at work. Both of the medical tents are still outside of the building, as well and a new mobile pod unit is set to open May 26th.

The health system is also allowing elective surgeries at NGMC Gainesville to resume; they were previously suspended to allow more bed space for COVID-19 patients. However any patient who schedules a surgery must be tested for COVID-19 two to three days before their appointment.

But the work happening at NGMC Gainesville is not all medical, staff are also making every effort to provide emotional care for patients and their families.

AccessWDUN reporter Lauren Hunter got an inside look at these measures and more during a tour of Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville on Friday.
