Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia (GSHG) recently honored 19 girls, including four from the North Georgia area, with the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award at the first ever virtual Highest Award Ceremony. Younger Girl Scouts who have earned the Silver or Bronze Award and volunteers who have earned council level awards were also honored during the ceremony on May 5, 2020.
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the most prestigious award available exclusively to Girl Scouts. For more than a century, Girl Scouts have been taking steps toward lasting solutions for some of the most challenging problems facing their communities and the world. A girl who earns her Girl Scout Gold Award is a true G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™.
According to information in a press release, a Gold Award Girl Scout is bold, honest and determined to succeed. She identifies and investigates an issue that’s important to her, then builds a team, creates a plan and takes action to make a difference. Thinking outside the box is her specialty, so she’s always looking for creative ways to make an impact. Courageous and strong, she’s keen to try new things and embrace the unfamiliar. She’s confident, responsible and committed to changing the world.
Gold Award Girl Scouts from the North Georgia area include:
Sara Laine, Gainesville, GA ~ Troop #10849

Sara designed a mental health education system for middle schoolers in her area. The program, intended to be taught by an older peer, is to raise awareness about mental illness and mental health. She hopes for the program to inspire a generation without a stigma against mental illness.
Rebecca Jensen, Loganville, GA ~ Individually Registered Member

Rebecca designed and implemented a workshop about camping for beginning campers of all ages. She developed and created a workbook and Facebook page with camping resources for those wanting to learn.
Leeanna Strickland, Winder, GA ~ Troop #11840

Leeanna fundraised for and built a permanent community pavilion, addressing the need for more community meeting and event space in her rural community. Since building the pavilion, several events (including a wedding) have taken place at the space.
Ansley Talafous, Cleveland, GA ~ Troop #11728
