Eligible students at the University of North Georgia may get a portion of the school’s federal coronavirus aid to help with financial challenges they face this semester, the university announced Friday.

UNG is getting $6.8 million from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, better known as the CARES Act, and it plans to begin distributing the funds to eligible students starting Tuesday.

“We understand how stressful and challenging this global crisis continues to be for our students and their families,” President Bonita Jacobs said. “We hope that the funds UNG is providing through the CARES Act and other resources will help reduce the burdens faced by our students.”

Eligible students will receive automatic grants of $100 to $500. Students who are facing specific hardships may apply for up to $700 in additional assistance through the UNG CARES Emergency Grant.

The funds may be used for COVID-19-related expenses and disruptions, such as housing, utilities, food, technology, books, supplies, transportation, gas, and insurance. Similar grants will also be available to eligible students who continue their enrollment into summer semester.

Students who are eligible must have been enrolled for spring semester as of April 20, 2020; have completed a FAFSA for 2019-2020; have been enrolled in at least one face-to-face class as of March 13; and be eligible for federal financial aid.

Georgia National Guard student-soldiers who were activated for the battle against COVID-19 and received military withdrawals prior to April 20, are also eligible.

Federal guidelines exclude transient students, non-degree-seeking students, dual-enrolled students, international students, and students not eligible for Title IV financial aid.

The UNG Foundation is partnering with UNG’s Office of Financial Aid and the Student Money Management Center to provide emergency resources for those who may not be eligible for federal CARES Act funding. Students who need to apply for this emergency funding should contact the Student Money Management Center or Office of Financial Aid.

The university has posted additional information on its UNG Cares website.
