Attempted murder suspect extradited from Stephens County

An Oconee County, S.C., man charged in an attempted murder investigation has been extradited back to Oconee County, S.C.

Devan Chavis Bennett, 27, was apprehended around 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Stephens County.

Bennett, who was booked in just before 9 a.m. Monday in Oconee County, was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in connection with the shooting of a female victim in southern Oconee County, S.C., last Wednesday afternoon, said Master Deputy Jimmy Watt.

“As a result of evidence gathered in the continuing investigation, Bennett has also been charged by investigators with one additional count of attempted murder for attempting to shoot a male in the same incident,” Watt said.

Due to privacy and/or safety concerns, the names of the victims in the case are not being released.

On Thursday, March 26, Oconee County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Seneca woman and a Walhalla man on charges related to the same investigation. Regina Leigh Mote, 47, of Seneca, S.C., and Timothy Wayne Rogers, 47, of Wahalla, S.C., were booked into the Oconee County Detention Center around on one count each of accessory after the fact of a felony. Mote also was served an outstanding family court bench warrant.

According to arrest warrants, which were based on evidence gathered during the investigation, Mote and Rogers rendered assistance to Bennett knowing that Bennett had committed the crime of attempted murder, Watt said. Mote and Rogers are Bennett’s biological mother and stepfather.

At this time, Mote and Rogers remain in custody at the Oconee County Detention Center. Both were given $25,000 surety bonds on their charges.

Bennett is charged with two counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He was arrested in Stephens County Thursday. His mother and stepfather, Regina Leigh Mote and Timothy Wayne Rogers, are charged with one count each of accessory after the fact of a felony.
