Gainesville Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of a house fire Sunday morning that damaged the first floor of a home on Candler Street in Gainesville.

The home was in the 800 block and all of the residents were able to escape prior to fire crews arriving, according to Fire Division Chief Keith Smith.

Smith said in a press release that despite the fact there were no visible flames or smoke, a heavy cloud of black smoke came out of the home when the front door was opened.

Fire crews used an interior attack and kept the fire to a bedroom on the first floor. There was smoke damage throughout the residence.

No one was injured. Smith encouraged residents in the release to ensure their smoke alarms were working at least monthly.
