The Georgia High School Association responded to Gov. Brian Kemp's order of gatherings of no more than 10 people this week, postponing all sports and events to at least April 6.
"His mandate of no gatherings of more than 10 people certainly applies to schools and sporting events," GHSA Executive Director Robin Hines said in a statement. "I am also aware of schools and communities mandating closures beyond this date. The fact is that we are in unprecedented times and our situation remains fluid."
The GHSA had originally said it would reaccess and make a decision about moving forward on Friday. But most area schools are now waiting until spring break is over to make a decision whether to go back or not. The return date from spring break for most schools is April 13.
Hines said the GHSA Associate Directors will meet on Friday to plan for all scenarios that could pertain to the spring season and spring championships. With the rapid spread and concern of the coronavirus across the state, officials are now looking at the possibility of a complete cancellation of all spring sports.
"All we can do is take the information available to us at the time and make the best decisions we can moving forward," Hines said. "Our top priority is the safety of our student-athletes and those with whom they have contact. As a reminder, all practices and competitions continue to be suspended until further notice."
The GHSA is at a crossroads with a decision especially when it comes to baseball and soccer. The regular season is supposed to end for soccer on April 16 and baseball on April 18.
