With the apparent end to the 2019-20 high school season surely imminent because of the coronavirus epidemic, if the official Georgia Athletic Directors Association (GADA) Cup titles were awarded now, five northeast Georgia programs, boys and girls, would claim state championships.
The points would be awarded through the end of winter sports (basketball and wrestling) and include all of the fall sports.
Both the Buford boys and girls in Class 5A, both the Jefferson boys and girls in Class 3A, and the Union County boys in Class 2A would win GADA Cup titles.
Scoring Structure for GADA
Twenty-five GHSA sports will be counted in the standings each school year. Each school’s eight highest scoring sports for each gender shall be counted in the Regions Bank Directors Cup Standings. Co-ed sports have been categorized based on majority number of participants.
There are no ties for cup winners. In the event of a points tie a winner will be determined by the number of championships won. Then by the number of runners up in championships (if needed). Then by third places (if needed) etc…
For the Buford teams, the boys (337 points) were powered by a state title in football, a third-place finish in Duals wrestling, and an Elite 8 showing in basketball. The Lady Wolves (429) were led by a state championship in basketball, a semifinal appearance in volleyball, and a fourth place finish in softball.
For Jefferson, the boys (339) were paced a state runner-up finish in basketball, a fourth place showing in Duals wrestling, and an Elite 8 appearance in football. The Lady Dragons (438) were powered by an Elite 8 finish in basketball and by making the playoffs in every sanctioned sport.
The Union County boys (216) were the surprise edging out Chattooga (208) by eight points. The Panthers became the first public county program to win the cup since at least 2012. They were led by the football team’s first-ever playoff win and a Sweet 16 finish.
But those weren’t the only programs to show huge success. Also in Class 2A, the Banks County girls (286) finished second and the Banks County boys (195) were fifth. The Rabun County girls (233) came in seventh and the Rabun County boys (70) were 40th.
In Class 3A, the North Hall girls (309) finished third overall, powered by a semifinal finish in basketball. The North Hall boys (256) took eighth overall, led by a state championship in the wrestling Duals.
In Class A, the Commerce boys (253) took fourth paced by a state runner-up finish in the wrestling Duals. The Commerce girls (277) finished sixth powered by a third place finish in softball.
