THOMASTON — The Georgia High School Association on Tuesday officially released a statement concerning the coronavirus.

“There is currently no guidance for canceling mass gatherings other than for individuals at high risk to stay home and for everyone to practice appropriate hygiene (handwashing, etc.) that would normally be practiced during the flu season,” executive director Robin Hines said in a letter to every member school. “We are told [by the CDC] not to overreact and that decisions to postpone games should be local decisions made with appropriate information.”

Hall County Director of Communication Stan Lewis issued this statement last week:

“Out of an abundance of caution, the Hall County School District is asking that individuals who have traveled to countries designated by the CDC as level two or higher in the past 14 days to not attend district extracurricular activities. This includes events held on campuses and at school-sponsored activities off-site.

“Once these individuals have self-monitored for 14 days and have presented no symptoms, they may return to our schools’ extracurricular events.

“We greatly appreciate our public’s support of our students and programs. However, these measures are now in place to protect the health of students, staff members, and the Hall County community.”

This time of the school year is the busiest for GHSA sports. More than half-a-dozen sports -- baseball, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, slow-pitch softball, soccer, tennis, and track and field -- currently are in season.
