The son of U.S. Rep. Tom Graves was critically injured Sunday while competing in a bicycle road race in Calhoun, the congressman’s office announced Monday.

John Graves, a member of the Georgia Tech club cycling team, was flown from the scene to a trauma hospital, where he remains in intensive care, a news release said.

“He’s a strong boy and is showing signs of responsiveness,” Graves said. “We appreciate the outpouring of support and continued prayers as John begins his recovery.”

The Georgia Tech cycling team was hosting a road race and criterium in Calhoun over the weekend when the accident occurred. Graves’ office did not say how his son was injured.

The release said John Graves is being cared for by “a top-notch team of doctors and medical professionals.”

Graves was first elected to Congress in 2010 in a special election for Georgia’s ninth congressional district. When reapportionment added a new district following the 2010 Census, Graves ran for and won the 14th congressional district seat. He has served there ever since.

But in December, he announced that he would not seek re-election in 2020, saying he wanted to spend more time with his wife and adult children. Ten candidates qualified last weeks to try and succeed him.
