CLARKESVILLE – The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate Saturday morning’s fatal fire on Yonah Post Road, which has been ruled a homicide.

“We have arrested a suspect in the case, Jeremy {Ray} Chastain,” Sheriff’s Lt. Matt Wurtz said Saturday night.

Jeramy Ray Chastain has currently only been charged with criminal trespass, Wurtz said Sunday morning.

The death investigation related to Saturday’s fire continues.

“It was not stranger to stranger,” Wurtz said. “We are waiting on more information from the medical examiner.”

Habersham County Emergency Services personnel and sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to 691 Yonah Post Road, just off Ga. 365, about 6:45 a.m., Wurtz said.

Because of the report of unknown entrapment, fire units from Banks County and White County responded to assist Habersham County Emergency Services stations and Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Department.

“We’ve got the state fire marshal’s office looking at it, we’ve got the GBI and us, all doing a collaborative investigation trying to figure things out really,” Wurtz said.

Wurtz said additional details of the joint investigation will be released when available.

The identity of the female victim is being withheld pending notification of family, Wurtz said.
