A Hall County Sheriff's Office investigation of a cybertip helped officers with the LaGrange Police Department find sexually explicit photos on a jail inmate's phone.

According to the Hall County Sheriff's Office, the cybertip came to the department via the GBI Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force on Feb. 17. That tip enabled an investigator to connect the dots between a pre-paid cell phone that had been given to the inmate by a Hall County resident.

The inmate, identified as 32-year-old Charles Ray Dye, Jr., was allowed to have the phone per his status at the LaGrange Transitional Center. However, the materials discovered on the phone were illegal.

Police met with Dye on Tuesday, Feb. 25 to follow up on the tip and began to process the material on the phone.

"Upon review of this device, numerous still photos and videos were located in a 'secured application' depicting various children under the age of 16 engaged in various sexual acts," read a statement from the LaGrange Police Department.

Dye was charged with Violation of the Computer or Electronic Pornography and Child Exploitation Act of 2007, and police said more charges are likely as the investigation continues. Dye was transferred from the LaGrange Transitional Center to a more secure facility within the Georgia Department of Corrections, according to LaGrange PD.
