Feral puppy ‘Timmy’ rescued from abandoned well in Cornelia

CORNELIA – A puppy that has eluded Habersham County Animal Control personnel since November found itself in need of rescue Monday.

“A resident on Tutt Road in Cornelia called animal control personnel at 1:30 Monday afternoon, saying she’d heard a puppy crying for days and just found it in what appeared to be an old well,” said Habersham County Animal Care and Control Director Madi Nix.

Nix said she and Animal Control Officer Lacey McAnally responded and found the puppy in about a 10-foot hole.

After borrowing a ladder from a nearby resident, Nix descended to attempt to get to the animal. Because it was feral, Nix had to use a catch pole to get the puppy that was trying to bite her.

“We’re naming him Timmy because he fell in the well,” Nix said. “He was cold, hungry and dehydrated,” Nix said. “But now he has a full belly and warm blankets.”

After a five-day hold for stray reclaim, Timmy should be available for adoption, but Nix said it will take a patient new family to teach him how to be loved.

Nix estimates the puppy’s age at 6 months, adding she and other animal control officers have been trying to locate it since it was reported as abandoned in the area in November.

A Cornelia resident reported finding the feral puppy in this former well off Tutt Road in Cornelia Monday afternoon, but was unable to reach it.
"Timmy", the puppy who fell down the well, could be up for adoption after a five-day hold at the Habersham County Animal Shelter.
