After a two-day break, rain is making a return to most of Georgia, including the Gainesville area, to start the new work week, with some places expecting up to three inches.

The National Weather Service is forecasting rainfall amounts ranging from one to 1.5 inches across most of North Georgia, including Gainesville, Athens, and Atlanta, and as much as three inches in the Vidalia-Dublin area in Southeast Georgia.

Though no flood watches had been issued as of Sunday evening, any rain that does fall will do so on grounds already saturated by above-average rainfall which has occurred since the first of the year, and has swollen streams and rivers and caused Lake Lanier to rise to near-record levels.

The level of the lake as of 7:15 Sunday night was 1076.35, 5.35 feet above full pool, but down from a few days ago when it was about a half-foot or so shy of the all-time record high of 1077.14 which occurred in 1964.
