Girls playoff basketball: LCA advances to 3rd straight GAPPS final

MACON — The Lanier Christian Academy girls basketball team is hoping the third time will be the charm in 2020.

The Lady Lightning advanced to their third consecutive Division 1-AA GAPPS championship game with a 39-32 win over Central Fellowship Christian Academy Thursday night.

LCA (19-4) will take on Westminster Christian Academy on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 5 pm at First Presbyterian Day School in Macon.

Lanier Christian was able to overcome a slow start. The Lady Lightning led 7-5 after the first quarter but Central Fellowship used a 10-3 second quarter to run out to a 15-10 halftime lead.

But junior Lexie Robertson shot LCA into the lead in the third quarter draining three 3-pointers for a 24-20 lead going into the final period. In the fourth quarter, 8th-grader Faith Wasden scored 9 points, including hitting 7-of-8 free throws to held the Lady Lightning hang on down the stretch. 

Wasden finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, including going 9-of-10 from the line, for the game. Robertson had 12 points, junior Reese Montgomery had 6 points and 7 rebounds, and senior Madison Hughes contributed with 4 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore Ashley Avery pulled down 4 rebounds for LCA.

Gwyn Andrews led Central Fellowship with 18 points.
