GAINESVILLE — Lakeview Academy opened its 2020 baseball campaign in dominating fashion Wednesday.
The Lions, behind a four-hitter from Andrew Estes, whipped Lumpkin County 12-2 in six innings at Lakeview Field.
It took both teams a few innings to shake off the rust. Lumpkin County (0-1) took the initial lead with a run in the top of the third. But the Lakeview offense answered in a big way.
Skyler Thellman blasted a two-run home run in the third and Sam Stewart added a three-run bomb in the fourth to ignite a 6-run inning as the Lions exploded for eight runs in the two frames. The Indians pulled within 8-2 in the fifth but the Lions scored four in the sixth to invoke the Mercy Rule.
Estes had just as big a day at the plate collecting three hits, including a double, and he knocked in three runs on the day. Stewart finished with two hits, including the home run, and drove in 4 and scored twice.
Lakeview (1-0) next will play again on Monday against North Cobb Christian.
